Duties
What chiropractors usually do is this:
Patients' general health is the primary concern of chiropractors. Chiropractors think that a person's neuromuscular system can be adversely affected by malfunctioning spinal joints and other somatic tissues.
In addition to spinal adjustments and manipulation, some chiropractors also utilize massage treatment, rehabilitative exercise, and ultrasound. In order to treat patients and alleviate discomfort, they may also use supports such as braces or shoe inserts.
Chiropractors can specialize in a variety of fields, including sports medicine, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, and nutrition, in addition to general chiropractic. Marketing, recruiting employees, and keeping records are all the responsibility of chiropractors in private practice.
Education
Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degrees are necessary for aspiring chiropractors, and they normally take four years to complete. Chiropractic programs are accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education.
A bachelor's degree is required for admittance into several D.C. programs that require at least 90 semester hours of undergraduate education. A bachelor's degree in biology or a healthcare-related discipline is commonly required of potential D.C. students before they may apply. School requirements for chiropractic schools vary, but they often include courses in the liberal arts and sciences including physics, chemistry and biological sciences. Candidates should verify the unique criteria of each institution with the help of the admissions offices.
Anatomy, physiology, and biology are just a few of the topics covered in a D.C. degree program. Clinical training in spinal evaluation and adjustment procedures and establishing diagnoses is also provided to chiropractic students in a supervised clinical setting. Classes on business management, billing, and finance are also possible in D.C. programs. Most D.C. programs allow students to get a bachelor's or master's degree in a different subject while still finishing their D.C. program.
Diplomate qualifications are earned by certain chiropractors after completing postgraduate schools. Specialty training in orthopedics and pediatrics is available through these programs. Chiropractic colleges are where students take their classes.
Registration, Licenses, and Certifications
Chiropractors must be licensed in every state and the District of Columbia, as well. To become a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC), you must complete a recognized curriculum and pass the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) test, which varies from state to state.
The jurisprudence examinations, which are state-specific legal exams, are also required in several states. Every state requires a chiropractor to complete continuing education programs in order to keep their license active. Contact your state's health agency or board of chiropractic examiners for further information about licensing.
Qualities that may matter
The ability to make decisions. When treating a patient, chiropractors have to figure out what the best course of action is. In addition, they must decide when to send patients to other healthcare providers.
Focused on the smallest details. It is critical for chiropractors to keep their eyes open, and their attention focused on the tiniest of details in order to make accurate diagnoses and prevent potentially harmful errors.
Dexterity. Chiropractors must have strong hand-eye coordination since they use their hands to adjust the spine and other joints.
Empathy. People in pain are frequently treated by chiropractors. They must be empathetic to their patients' difficulties and wants.
The ability to interact with others. Chiropractors need to be approachable if they want to keep their patients coming back. Furthermore, chiropractors should be able to put their patients at ease because they regularly touch their patients during therapy.
The ability to manage oneself. Schedule appointments, manage personnel, bill insurance companies, and keep patient files are all responsibilities that may fall to chiropractors who work for themselves. A well-run firm relies on meticulous record-keeping and other forms of organization.
Pay
The median annual wage for chiropractors was $79,000 in May 2024. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $44,780, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $149,990.
Job Projections
Employment of chiropractors is projected to grow 10 percent from 2023 to 2033, much faster than the average for all occupations.
