Researchers in physics study the underlying features and principles that govern the universe. For example, they may research theories and conduct experiments, or they may apply their expertise to the development of materials or equipment.
It's the job of astronomers to figure out what's up there in the sky. They employ both ground-based and space-based equipment, including as optical telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope, for their research. These include black holes and neutron stars, which are studied by certain astronomers. Satellite activities might be jeopardized by space debris that is being monitored by others.
Applied research is a popular career path for many physicists and astronomers. They employ their expertise in fields such as energy storage, electronics, communications, and navigation to develop new technologies or address issues. Other researchers focus on developing ideas that explain notions like gravity or the origin of the world, such as the Big Bang theory.
Researchers in the fields of physics and astronomy frequently collaborate with engineers and other sciences. Team members' progress can be monitored by senior astronomers and physicists. Research money may also be a consideration for them.

Material and condensed matter Scientists in the field of physics investigate the physical characteristics of matter at the molecular, nanoscale, and beyond. In their research, they investigate a wide spectrum of phenomena, from superconductivity to liquid crystals.
They research radiation and its consequences on individuals, communities, and the natural environment. They ensure that radiation is used to its full capacity while safeguarding employees and the general public from radiation-related risks.
Physicians who specialize in medical physics use their expertise in physics to develop innovative medical technology and radiation-based therapies. As an example, certain cancer patients may benefit from safer radiation treatments. MRI and ultrasonic imaging, for example, are being developed by others as better methods of capturing radiant energy for imaging.
Quantum mechanics is concerned with the study of elementary particles like quarks, electrons, and nuclei and the forces that interact with them.
A separate state of matter known as plasma is studied by plasma physicists, whose work may be found in things like neon signs and fluorescent lights as well as in the stars and interplanetary space. In the future, these researchers may look into the possibility of using fusion reactors to generate electricity.
Information processing, computing, and encryption can all benefit from the utilization of quantum objects, such as atoms and photons. For them, quantum physics and its inherent uncertainty are a primary concern.

Education
Research and teaching positions in the sciences often need a doctorate in a relevant discipline, such as physics, astronomy, or a closely related field.
Condensed matter physics and cosmology are examples of subfields of physics that graduate students might specialize in. Ph.D. students are required to take math courses including calculus, linear algebra, and statistics, as well as physics or astronomy courses. It is also possible to employ computer science to create programs that collect, analyze, and model data.
This degree is typically necessary to attend a master's or doctoral program in physical science or an area of study linked to physical science, such as engineering. Typical undergraduate physics courses include quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetics, among others.

Engineers and computer scientists often hire physics graduates as technicians and research assistants because of their training in the discipline. A job as an observatory assistant may be available to those who have earned a bachelor's degree in astronomy. Courses in instrument construction and computer science may be of interest to students who do not wish to pursue PhD degrees.
Jobs in the federal government may be available to those with master's or bachelor's degrees. Others may choose to teach science at middle or high schools, respectively.
Training
For those with a Ph.D. in physics or astronomy who want to work in the field, a postdoctoral research position might be a good place to start. Scientists in more senior positions keep an eye on these junior researchers as they develop expertise and autonomy through more difficult assignments.
Qualities that may matter
Critical thinking abilities. Physicists and astronomers must constantly review their own work and the work of others in order to avoid mistakes that may invalidate their findings.
The ability to communicate. Present their findings at conferences, in front of the public, and in any other way possible. In addition, they provide technical reports for publishing and research funding bids.
The ability to use critical thinking. When doing scientific tests and investigations, it is important for physicists and astronomers to think rationally. There is a need to verify the accuracy of the findings and conclusions
The ability to interact with others. Working with others is essential to the success of physicists and astronomers; consequently, they must be able to communicate effectively with their coworkers.
ability to solve mathematical problems. Calculus, geometry, algebra, and other mathematical concepts are used in physics and astronomy. Mathematical words must be used to describe their findings.
The ability to solve problems. Researchers in the fields of physics and astronomy utilize a combination of analytical and creative thinking to address complex challenges. In the event that an experiment or hypothesis does not yield the anticipated results, they may have to rethink their method and come up with other options.
Self-discipline. Scientists and astronomers who work with enormous datasets for extended periods of time need a source of inspiration to keep them going.
Registration, Licenses, and Certifications
If you want to work for the federal government, you may need to be a U.S. citizen and have a security clearance.
Pay
In May 2020, the average yearly salary for astronomers was $119,730. If half of the people in a profession make more than the median wage, and half earn less, we say that the median wage is too high or too low. Between the bottom 10% and the top 10% of earners, there was a wide disparity in income.
Job Projections
Physics and astronomy jobs are expected to rise at a rate of 8% between 2020 and 2030, which is in line with the overall average for all occupations.
